Queenstown Airport has advised us that a dedicated coach parking facility will be operational from 1st July.  Please read their full email below.

Dedicated airport coach parking area

Over the past year we have been heavily investing in major ground transport improvements which include expanding public and staff car parking, improving traffic flow and safety, and providing purpose-built coach parks and commercial pickup/drop-off areas.  We are now moving to the final stage of the coach park development which we anticipate will be completed July as ski season starts in earnest.

The new dedicated coach parking facility will be operational from 1st July so we wanted to outline how it will work and update you on the airport's wider traffic flow changes.  A map showing the changes is attached for your reference.

Dedicated coach park

A dedicated 6-bay coach park is being built on the edge of Chris Read Green, which is located on the left just before the terminal building.  Chris Read Green is being re-landscaped to include trees, park benches, artworks and lighting in order to provide customers with better experience.  This means that large groups will be able to congregate safely away from the traffic in the main forecourt area.

How to access the coach park

New Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology and barrier arms will be in place to facilitate vehicle access into the dedicated parking area.  To access this area you will need an RFID card.  Each card issued will sit inside a vehicle's windscreen and access the barrier arm on approach.

To request a Commercial Access Agreement please email qac-property@queenstownairport.co.nz with your company contact details and the details each vehicle you wish to include in your registration. If you have already completed an agreement for vehicles of less than 25 seats, a new coach park agreement will still need to be submitted for the remainder of your larger fleet.

Once the Commercial Access Agreement is received and approved we will invite you to register with the online system - including vehicle make & model, registration numbers and seat numbers - before we issued RFID cards for each vehicle. RFID cards are windscreen mounted and are vehicle-specific so are not transferable between vehicles in your fleet.

As part of our works programme, we're currently constructing a new roundabout inside the airport entrance to:

  • provide easy exit for coaches and rental cars without the need to use the airport ring road
  • reduce traffic congestion and improve safety through the airport ring road
  • provide easy access to the public carpark.

From 1 July, coaches will take the left exit after the new roundabout marked 'Coaches' and will follow the 'Coach Park' signs and drive through the auto entry barrier arm to park in one of the bays.  The exit is back through the roundabout, meaning you will no longer have to drive right around the airport's ring road to get back onto Lucas Place.

Clear signage will be in place to help guide drivers and pedestrians.  Our operations support team will also be outside to assist visitors and manage traffic.

Coaches will be charged $35 plus GST per entry.

The new RFID technology means that you or your head office will be able to top up online remotely 24/7or setup auto top ups.  You will also be able to check and download your monthly activity statement online at any time.

Other car parking and traffic flow improvements

Other changes to be aware of are:

  • The current coach park is being moved and the 2-minute public drop-off zone is being re-introduced in its place immediately outside the terminal.
  • The public pick-up zone will remain the same - entering the short-term public carpark which offers 20-minute free parking.  This 20-minute zone also will be used for drop-offs that require more than 2 minutes.
  • 50 more car spaces added to the staff car park next to the St John Ambulance building
  • Storm water drainage is being upgraded across the airport, particularly in flood-prone areas.

Should you have any further queries please email qac-property@queenstownairport.co.nz ensuring your name, company and mobile number is included so that we may respond to your concerns.
