Construction Update March 2017 - Southern Corridor Improvements
Welcome to the March 2017 construction update for the New Zealand
Transport Agency's
Southern Corridor Improvements Project
PROGRESS THROUGH FEBRUARY
Over the last month, work continued to focus on
constructing the additional (third) southbound land from the Hill Road off-ramp
to the Takanini off-ramp, and between the Takanini on-ramp and 300m north of
the Pahurehure Inlet.
We also installed temporary
traffic management to extend our median work zone from the Pahurehure
Inlet to the Papakura Interchange. On the southbound side, lane are now
narrowed and a 80kph reduced speed limit was established on the morning of
Wednesday 15 February.
Work included:
Manukau Interchange to Hill Road:
- Under the Hill Road Bridge, the southbound
concrete bridge pier protection wall was completed.
Hill Road to Takanini Interchange:
- Retaining wall and noise wall
construction continued along the southbound side of the motorway between
Alfriston Road and the Takanini Interchange.
- Asphalting operations continued
to form the new lane on the southbound shoulder between Alfriston
Road and the Takanini Interchange.
- Light installation continued
along the median.
- Under the Alfriston Bridge,
drainage and pavement works continued.
Takanini Interchange to the
Pahurehure Inlet:
- Retaining
wall and noise wall construction continued along the southbound side of
the motorway.
- Earthworks
and drainage continued along the southbound shoulder in preparation for
pavement layers. This also included shaping of the new open channels
(also known as swales), which help treat stormwater as it runs off the
motorway.
- Vegetation
clearance continued along the northbound shoulder in preparation for
drainage works and noise wall construction.
Pahurehure Inlet to Papakura Interchange:
- Lanes
were shifted to the southbound shoulder in preparation for the new median
work zone.
Other Areas:
- On
the Papakura Stream Bridge, bridge deck construction, earthworks and
drainage works continued (please see the attached photo).
- At
bridges crossing the railway line and on the Spartan Road Bridge, deck and
retaining wall construction continued.
- Offsite
production of precast components for retaining walls, noise walls, and
bridges continued.
WORK BEING UNDERTAKEN IN MARCH
March will focus on completing the additional
southbound lane from the Hill Road off-ramp to the Takanini off-ramp, and
between the Takanini on-ramp and 300m north of the Pahurehure Inlet. This will
see work continuing in the median and shoulders
between Hill Road and the Papakura Interchange in the coming month.
From Monday 6 March, lane one (the slow lane) will be
separate from lane two to create a safe work area (please see the attached
picture). This will allow our construction team to continue widening the
motorway.
Around mid-March, we
will install temporary traffic management to extend our safe work
zone from the Pahurehure Inlet to the Papakura Interchange. This will include
narrowed lanes and a 80kph reduced speed limit on the northbound side.
Work will also continue on widening the motorway bridges over the Papakura
Stream and the KiwiRail Lines.
Work this month will include:
Manukau Interchange to Hill Road:
- Under Hill Road, the northbound
bridge pier protection wall will continue construction.
Hill Road to the Takanini Interchange:
- Under Alfriston Road, drainage
and pavement works continue to prepare for pavement layers. Construction
of slip form barriers will commence shortly after the completion of
pavement works.
- Retaining wall and noise wall
construction continue along the southbound side of the motorway between
Alfriston Road and the Takanini Interchange.
- Asphalting will continue along
the southbound shoulder between Alfriston Road and Takanini Interchange.
Takanini Interchange to Pahurehure Inlet:
- Vegetation
clearance will resume along the northbound side.
- Earthworks
and drainage continues along the southbound shoulder in preparation for
pavement layers. This also includes shaping of the new open channels
(also known as swales), which help treat stormwater as it runs off the
motorway.
- Retaining
wall and noise wall construction continued along the southbound side of
the motorway.
- Asphalting
will continue along the southbound shoulder between Takanini Interchange
and the Pahurehure Inlet.
Pahurehure Inlet to Papakura Interchange:
- Pavement
works begin to level the pavement along the northbound shoulder. This will
allow traffic to shift to the northbound shoulder and a new median work
zone will be established.
Other Areas:
- On
the Papakura Stream Bridge, bridge deck construction, earthworks and
drainage works will continue. This includes shaping of the new open
channels (also known as swales), which help treat stormwater as it runs
off the motorway.
- At
bridges crossing the railway line and on the Spartan Road Bridge, deck and
retaining wall construction will continue.
- Offsite
production of precast components for retaining walls, noise walls, and
bridges continue
With the narrowed lanes, there is less time to
react to other vehicles and it is important that motorists keep to the 80
km/h speed limit past our work areas. There will be ongoing
truck and project vehicle movements accessing the shoulder and the median work
sites. Keeping both motorists and our team members as safe as possible is
imperative and we need everyone's help to do this.
As always, we will be doing our best to
minimise effects of these works on motorists as much as we can. We thank you
for your patience as we work to improve journey reliability and safety along
the Southern Corridor.
