Progress through April

A total of four daytime working zones are now operating between Alfriston Road and Pahurehure Inlet. The most recent of these was installed overnight on 27 April 2016, with the safe work zone now in place in the median between Takanini Interchange and Pahurehure Inlet.  Over the last month in the Alfriston Road to Takanini Interchange area of work, the project team has:
  • Developed haulage tracks along the shoulder enabling our trucks to avoid the motorway to the greatest extent possible.
  • Removed the old median barrier and excavated the area in preparation for laying new pavement.
  • Largely completed vegetation clearance along the shoulders and topsoil has been stripped. These areas are now ready for earthworks and drainage installation.

Work being undertaken this month

Over the next month, work will continue in the median and shoulders between Alfriston and Pahurehure Inlet. We will also continue working on the foundations to widen the motorway bridge over the Papakura Stream, just north of the railway line.

In the office, the design for the southern corridor improvements is now largely complete. Long term planning is underway for future work areas to be established, including works around major utilities such as gas, water and power main lines.

Work this month involves:

  • Alfriston Road to Takanini Interchange
-  Drainage work will begin along the southbound shoulder of the motorway. This includes shaping of the new swales which will help treat stormwater as it runs off the motorway.
-  In the median area, base and asphalt layers will be going in to form the pavement

  • Takanini Interchange to Pahurehure Inlet:
- Work will continue removing the old median barrier to clear the way for works to occur.
- Where required, vegetation removal and mulching will continue on the shoulder along the southbound side of the motorway.

- Bulk earthworks in these areas will commence to shape the area for the new pavement and drainage.

- An access track will be constructed along the shoulder to enable our trucks to operate safely, avoiding the motorway to the greatest extent possible.
  • Other areas
- Work on Papakura Bridge, just north of the railway line, continues this month with site access and construction of footings for the upright supports or piers.
- We will commence precasting components for retaining walls and bridges.

- Work will begin to strengthen the abutments under bridges crossing the railway line.

- Across the project, long term environmental controls will be installed to maintain water quality during construction work

It is important that motorists keep to the 80km/h speed limit past our work areas. There will be ongoing truck and project vehicle movements accessing the shoulder and median work sites. Keeping both motorists and our team members as safe as possible is imperative and we need everyoneâ€â„¢s help to do this.

As always, we will be doing our best to minimise effects of these works on motorists as much as we can.

We thank you for your patience as we work to improve journey reliability and safety along the Southern Corridor.
